Avoiding Deportation

One of the benefits of being a Canadian citizen is that you are protected from being deported if you are convicted of a criminal offence.

Non-citizens, such as landed immigrants and permanent residents, do not have this benefit.

Non-citizens found guilty of certain offences or found to have misrepresented information on citizenship and immigration applications could be investigated by government officials and could be  deported.

Due process requires that you receive a fair hearing before a decision to deport you is made.

You have the right to be represented by counsel at hearings before administrative agencies and tribunals.

Legal counsel can assist in ensuring that you receive a fair hearing and that you are properly and effectively defended.

Successful representation may prevent further investigation or a deportation or both.
